Wailua, located between Kapaa and Lihue is passed quickly while driving along Kuhio Highway. A green and verdant river valley it's the only navigable river on Kauai with an impressive and culturally important collection of Heiau, and was once the seat of chiefly power on Kauai. Fed by two large and spectacular waterfalls, the Wailua River has a number of water-based and water-adjacent activities including kayak tours, water skiing and wakeboarding, and the well known Smith's family runs river cruise boats to the Fern Grotto as well as hosting a well known Garden Luau. Kauai Aadheenam ("Hindu Monastery"), is a temple complex, headquarters and home to an order of swamis and yogis of different nations on the river just to the east of the Wailua House Lots and Wailua Homestead residential areas. Though rundown and abandoned now, and the site of a long-running land dispute, Coco Palms was once Royal Hawaiian property that eventually became the site of one of the state of Hawaii's most famous and storied hotels. Hopefully one day good use will be made of this site and it's legendary fishponds fronting Wailua beach and adjacent bicycle and walk path.
