Kalaheo on Kauai's south side feels a little upcountry and cooler, especially in the evening due to it's higher elevation (682 ft makes a difference!) and it's short remove from the ocean. With Post Office, gas station, golf course, and homes and subdivisions often having great ocean views it can be a highly desirable place to live. Kukuiolono Park and Golf Course has a wonderful walk/jog path with Japanese garden, Hawaiian lava rock collection, and meditation Pavillion with commanding ocean and mountain views. The challenging 9-hole golf course that's open daily sometimes seems like a bonus. The historic Kauai Coffee Company, encompassing 3,100 acres nearby, is largest in the U.S. with a Visitor Center, free self-guided tours daily, and tastings. Just down the road is the Lawai International Center, long recognised as healing sanctuary, and beautifully replicating on a hillside walk path the famous 88 temple pilgrimmage in Shikoku, Japan. Nearby is the recently built Hall of Compassion replicating 13th Century temple architecture, and built with the help of more than 1,600 supporters and volunteers.
